Baseline situation
The Romanian Carpathian Mountains harbour a treasure of nature long lost to western Europe. Large virgin forests, big populations of wolves, bears, lynx, high biodiversity, and the largest unfragmented forests of central Europe make Romania extraordinary!
Unfortunately, these irreplaceable ecosystems are endangered. Intensive forestry combined with corporate greed as well as illegal logging campaigns have led to large scale clear cuts. Thus, tens of thousands of hectares of virgin forest have been lost in just the last 15 years. An area frequently lies fallow for decades since the demolished soil often cannot bring about a forest close to its original state on its own. In regards to climate protection and biodiversity these clear-cut areas are completely worthless. Replanting with the fast growing economically lucrative spruce at altitudes lower than those in which they naturally occur is a common however not sustainable practice, as the artificial monocultures suffer from poor biodiversity and are sensitive to extreme weather and parasites.

Die Foundation Conservation Carpathia (FCC) setzt sich dafür ein, die rumänischen Urwälder zu erhalten und auf Kahlflächen wieder naturnahe Wälder aus heimischen Baumarten zu etablieren. Ziel der Stiftung ist es in den rumänischen Karpaten ein Wildnisreservat von weltweiter Bedeutung zu schaffen, das sich durch ungestörte, natürliche Prozesse auszeichnet, zur Förderung der Biodiversität und zum Nutzen der lokalen Gemeinden.
Bis heute wurden 900 Hektar Kahlschlagsflächen mit über 3 Millionen Setzlingen wieder aufgeforstet. Die Setzlinge für die Wiederbewaldungsprojekte werden in neun eigenen Baumschulen angezogen.
In den letzten 11 Jahren hat die Foundation Conservation Carpathia 27.000 Hektar Wald aufgekauft und unter dauerhaften Schutz gestellt. Eigene Ranger kontrollieren diese Fläche regelmäßig, sodass es gelungen ist, den Raubbau dort fast komplett zu verhindern.
65.000 Hektar wurden angepachtet, um Wildtiere vor der Bejagung zu schützen.
Außerdem hat die Stiftung Bieber und Bisons wieder angesiedelt.
Einen wichtigen Teil ihrer Arbeit sieht die Stiftung darin, Arbeitsmöglichkeiten für die Menschen vor Ort zu schaffen und Umweltbildung zu betreiben. Im eigenen Umweltbildungszentrum erhalten Kinder die Möglichkeit mehr über Natur und Umwelt zu lernen.
Foundation Conservation Carpathia (FCC) is working towards preserving these virgin forests and restoring forest ecosystems close to their original state from domestic tree species in previously clear-cut areas. Carpathia aims to create a world-class wilderness reserve in the Romanian Carpathians characterised through undisturbed, natural processes, for the benefit of biodiversity and local communities.
Throughout the last 11 years, Foundation Conservation CARPATHIA has purchased 27,000 ha of forest and placed it under permanent protection. They have their own rangers regularly patrolling, leading to almost a complete eradication of illegal logging in these areas.
On 900 ha of old, illegal clear-cuts FCC has planted over 3 million trees raised in their own nine tree nurseries for the benefit of numerous other species that will thrive in these new forests.
The foundation has leased 65,000 ha to protect wildlife from hunting and has reintroduced bison and beavers. A new, green economy provides jobs for plenty of people and an education centre gives children the opportunity to learn about nature.
The project
In den Jahren 2019/20 hat die Foundation Conservation Carpathia ihren bisher größten Kahlschlag erworben: eine Fläche von 300 Hektar in Groapele in den Făgăraș-Bergen. Von diesen 300 Hektar sollen nun 255 Hektar wieder aufgeforstet werden. Vor den Rodungen befand sich dort ein alter und gesunder Mischwald. Durch jahrelangen illegalen Raubbau und den Verstoß gegen die Förstereirichtlinien wurde diese Waldfläche komplett zerstört. In dem Versuch, das Vergangene zu vertuschen, wurden außerdem zahlreiche überbleibende Baumstümpfe abgebrannt. Seit dem Erwerb der Fläche bemüht sich die Stiftung darum, den ursprünglichen Zustand wiederherzustellen.

Foundation Conservation Carpathia has purchased their largest clear cut in 2019/20. An area making up 300 Hectares, out of which 255 ha need to be restored (see the map). It is located in the Făgăraș Mountains at Groapele. Before it was cut, there was a healthy, old and wild mixed forest. Many years of illegal logging combined with non-compliance of forestry legislation led to a total clear cut in 2012. To cover up what happened the remaining tree stumps were burned.
In order to fully reforest this massive clear cut, your help is needed!
